Wired M‑Bus to LoRaWAN

The ACRIOS M-Bus to the LoRaWAN converter is designed for efficient readings of any wired M-Bus meters—typically electricity meters, water meters and heat meters, especially in the district heating industry. The device allows the integration of traditional M-Bus meters into the LoRaWAN wireless network, facilitating the data collection on consumption in intervals as short as fifteen minutes.

The solution from ACRIOS Systems significantly reduces the total cost of ownership (TCO) of projects requiring frequent remote readings of the M-Bus meters, thanks to features like remote configuration, plug-and-play setup or the WAGO terminals for quick installation.

NB-IoT connectivity – today, the  Narrowband IoT coverage is available almost everywhere, with a reach even in hard-to-access areas. Additionally, SIM cards can be obtained for as little as 1 EUR per year.
The antenna connector for the wM-Bus reception is designed to minimize losses, ensuring the highest possible reception sensitivity. As a result, we can cover up to 6 floors, depending on the type of building.
The internal NB-IoT antenna provides sufficient coverage and eliminates the need for two external antennas, preventing the possibility of them being swapped during the installation.
Thanks to the standard SMA connector, you can use a cable to extend the antenna from the hard-to-reach places.
A big battery designed  to last over 10 years with the daily readings from Monday to Friday.
Waterproof casing (IP67) for the outdoor installations – for example, even on the street lighting in the middle of a housing estate.
During the manufacturing, we insert your SIM card, connect the battery and upload your configuration. This way, you don't need to spend extra time on the device and it can go directly to the installation.
Screws that won't fall out of the cover during installation make the assembly easier and ensure that the IP rating of the converter is not compromised.

What Obstacles Might You Encounter?
If you've ever searched for a solution for the wired M‑Bus meters—such as heat meters or water meters—and their connection to a LoRaWAN network, you have likely encountered the following situations:
Possible Issues:
  • Multiple meters within the installation have the same primary address, however requiring the secondary addressing.
  • Meters require varying amounts of time to power the bus before the actual reading.
  • The installation requires the connection of different meters from various manufacturers.
  • One meter requires only 1UL, while another nearby needs 2UL.
  • In installations without a power supply,M-Bus communication needs to be battery-powered.
  • Concentrators require an external power for the M-Bus or have a limited list of supported devices.
  • The presence of atypical devices with addresses containing characters beyond the M-Bus standard.
  • Excessively long data messages from the meter that need to be sent over to the LoRaWAN network in a five separate transmissions.
Our Solution

We have resolved all of these issues. ACRIOS Systems converters can read any meter with a wired M-Bus standard using the primary or secondary addressing. Our solution is suitable for small businesses as well as large district heating plants for the online meter readings and optimization of the distribution network.

We are experienced in building and operating the private LoRaWAN networks, allowing us to minimize the M-Bus messages while maintaining the M-Bus standard. This ensures that our clients do not hit the duty cycle limits while still receiving data in a format that can be processed using any M-Bus parser.
